When you are elderly

We are now living longer and enjoying better health. Today, many people can live an active, independent life even in advanced old age. At the same time, for most people the process of ageing does bring the need for increasingly frequent visits to the healthcare and medical services.

That is why our website contains information which we believe can be interesting and useful for you when you are elderly.

Live a healthier life

It is a good thing that we have the healthcare and medical services, but often enough we can look after our own health just as well. Even as an elderly person you have a better chance of staying in good health if you live a healthy life. Your diet and exercise, your drinking and sleeping habits, and the question of whether you smoke or expose yourself to stress, all have their due effect on how you feel and how your future health is going to be.

Preparing to see the doctor

Many people feel anxious about going to see the doctor or care staff. It is easy to forget what you wanted to say and to ask about. We have put together a few simple few ideas on how to prepare so as to make your visit easier.

Medical care at home

Medical care at home is mainly meant for you if you can´t get to a care centre. Your GP is the doctor in charge of those receiving medical care at home. For people with dementia, special dementia nurses are available.

In Blekinge, the municipal local authority is responsible for medical care at home when a patient is living in local authority protected housing. The County Council is responsible for medical care given in a patient´s own home.

Medical care at home is a common form of care in the final stage of life.

Patient associations and organisations for the disabled

If you have an illness, you are seldom alone in that. Patient associations and organisations for the disabled mean that you can get in touch with other people who are in the same situation. There are many patient associations and organisations for the disabled in Blekinge. They work with the special questions, problems and possibilities of various groups, and they can give you support and advice.
