BlekingeCounty Council is responsible for seeing that all children and adults in the county have regular dental care. The dental care provided by the County Council aims chiefly at preventing cavities (holes in the teeth) and other problems. You have the right to choose which dentist to go to. You can choose a dentist at one of the dental surgeries run by the County Council, or you can go to a private dentist. If you have recently moved into the area, you should find your own way to the dental surgery that suits you best.
Dental care for children and young people
Up to the end of the year in which you reach the age of 19, dental care is free of charge. You are regularly asked to come for dental examinations, preventive care and whatever treatment is needed. Just like other people, children and young people or their parents have the right to choose which dentist to go to. Dental care for adults
Starting in the year in which you reach the age of 20, you have to pay for your dental care. Your basic dental care, which means preventive care, fillings, extractions, root fillings and acute dental care, is partially funded by the Social Insurance, ie the National Health. If you need help for any major work such as crowns, bridges, partial crowns or implants, ie other fixed teeth instead of removable false teeth, there are special rules for financial help. Preventive dental care - if you were born in 1966 or later
If you live in BlekingeCounty and were born in 1966 or later, a new scheme has been in operation since 2005, and this is called preventive dental care. Preventive dental care means that you pay a fixed contribution every month or once a year. The fee covers examinations, preventive dental care, fillings, acute dental care and the dentist´s fee for crowns and bridges. Your fixed contribution depends on the state of your oral health. If you have been looking after your teeth, your contribution may be lower. Dental care if you are aged 65 or over
If you are aged 65 or over, the same principles apply as for other adults, but you get a higher rate of financial assistance from the Social Insurance Office for basic dental care, and there is a special maximum cost ceiling if you require dentures or other false teeth. Specialist dental care
The specialist dental care service looks after patients with more complex care needs, such as patients who are in serious danger of losing teeth, or who need complicated surgery or advanced orthodontic care (tooth adjustment). There are six specialist dental clinics in Blekinge providing treatment for patients when they have been referred from dentists and doctors. If you require special resources
The hospital departments for dental care in Karlshamn and Karlskrona have the special resources that are needed if you are ill or disabled and cannot go to your usual dentist for dental care. If you are being cared for at home and it is difficult for you to get to a dental clinic, you are entitled to have the dentist visit you at home. The County Council is also responsible for dental care at several nursing homes in the county. Standard prices
Under Blekinge County Council, treatment costs the same whichever surgery you go to. At the end of each examination you can get an estimate of what the necessary treatment is going to cost.
